Local Joe studies Tyshawn Jones' high ollie, picks out 10 technique points, and practices them at a skatepark. He raises a flatbar on a manual pad until he beats his own high ollie record, gaining 6 inches.

Why skaters like it

Gets linked in r/NewSkaters and r/skateboarding when someone asks how to ollie higher or why their tail will not rise. Commenters credit it for weight distribution and foot timing.

“Learning bs 180s is what taught me better weight distribution. Like it's all on my front foot, then transfers to my back hip and thigh, then it's power back in my front for landing.”

Tip people rarely talk about: tighten your trucks. People here always say ride the board more or do them moving, but having lose trucks is something that can hinder progress when you’re starting out because it’s harder to get comfortable on the board and find your center of gravity. In this video it looks like you have to focus a lot of your ankle and calf energy on just balancing, rather than being able to stand on

Such a clean Ollie man, but I feel like you can definitely get them higher if you wait to lift the front foot up as the back is coming up. If you watch the video your front foot is sliding before the back foot has finished the pop. If you want a good reference watch this video Tyshawn Jones Ollie Technique [VIDEO]

just do it a buncha times and you'll start to adjust. basically sciency stuff says the less foot on the board the easier pops are, and if your center of gravity is distributed evenly (on the back half longways) the board will fly up straight. Here's a longer vid that explains more abt it with ollies [VIDEO]

I'm going to assume there is a difference in weight distribution, but that it won't come down to you knowing it, but step-by-step increasing speed and practice popping and normalizing the pop at each step. You can look at the pro skaters with the best pop and see if you can get a breakdown of them. That will probably help. Example: [VIDEO]

You could try working on bringing your knees up even closer to your ears like the way Tyshawn Jones [VIDEO] does, he's known for the bonkers vertical on his ollies.

It’s going to take time obviously but one thing that helped me was watching breakdowns of pro skaters like this video on tyshawn jones Ollie [VIDEO]
