Why skaters like it

Go-to reply in r/NewSkaters when someone's ollie turns mid-air. Helps pin down whether shoulders, weight or front foot slide is causing it.

[LINK] Your front arm is going behind you causing a bit of a shoulder turn and thus the ollie turns. Work on bringing your arms together and whipping them up and out to either side, and not whipping the front arm behind you like this. This vid by whythetrick is great for diagnosing issues that might cause a turn in your ollie - [VIDEO]

whythetrick has two videos on this: [VIDEO] [VIDEO] In general I think this problem comes from practicing pop and slide. Pop and slide is a huge lie. You can escape from it but ultimately you have to leave it behind. But I think it traps a lot of people in psuedo-ollies that don't generalize to rolling, or to high ollies, or to ollies over an obstacle. I don't really understand why people who have escaped from Pop and Slide still teach it. I suppose "it's the way I learned". Start with your landing stance (this isn't your problem, but do it anyway). Do you know what your landing stance should look like? Roll around with balls of feet on bolts, heels slightly raised. If you are not in control of your board your stance is wrong. When you get it right, look at your feet and remember what this "bolts" stance looks like. Next practice actually landing. Jump up from bolts and land in bolts. Do it rolling, too. Are you taking off and landing in control? By the way, when practicing, always jump as high as you can. Never jump in a crouch. If you want a small jump, bend your knees a very small amount and jump as high as you can from there, which won't be very high. In this way you are learni…

i'm dealing with this myself. The first thing to do is identify why your ollies are turning Whythetrick has a great video on this [VIDEO] Like I said I am still working on this. I find that when I take actions to straighten my ollies I lose a little consistency so I still have some bad habits as muscle memory I need to overcome.

I got value out of watching this video. For me it was 2 things. 1 stiff ankles moving my hips back in the squat and 2 opening my hip on the front foot slide. Changed my stance a little and focused on rotating front leg at the knee during the slide has straightened my board out. [VIDEO]
