A 28 second Skate IQ clip breaking down ollie mechanics, covering how pop and front foot movement work. Published in 2024 as a short explainer.

Why skaters like it

Gets linked in r/NewSkaters ollie help threads for fixing a trapped tail and understanding what the feet actually do.

“Your back foot is hitting the ground with the tail and your jumping off the ground. If you do that while moving and on concrete you'll trap the tail to the ground and the board wont pop with you. …”

Hey, great height! You have to roll, because you aren't landing accurately enough. And you might not be jumping accurately enough; you won't know unless you roll. Do smaller jumps but roll. Then work on height only once you have the accuracy. Your back foot is too far back on the tail, that gives you too much power and not enough speed. You are sliding the front foot: [VIDEO] You are landing with feet together. This is unstable and dangerous. You are hurrying; if you don't get airtime your body won't travel, if your body doesn't travel you won't ever clear anything. And you can't pick your knees up if you don't allow time to do it.

No shade because I would've said the same thing until recently, but the sliding your foot thing is nonsense. It just isn't what happens. All you have to do with your front foot is lift it as high as you can when you jump. Ollie Logic (youtube.com) [VIDEO] Visualizing mine like this lately has helped me a lot.

I rally highly recommend Mitchie Brosco's YouTube channel. He's a skateboarding legend and he is so good at explaining tricks, check him out. [VIDEO]

Jump, throw the tail against ground HARD, bring your front knee to your chest. You don’t really “slide” your front foot, as ppl commonly say. [VIDEO]

Watch this video. I know there’s a lot of instructional vids out there but this here really helped me understand it better than anyone else. [VIDEO]

Op this is correct, go watch all of SkateIQs videos. Jump off the board not the ground. Forget about sliding your foot. [VIDEO]
