Why skaters like it
Beginners get pointed to it whenever someone asks how to pick up a board without bending over. Commenters call it stylish but say it takes practice.
“Look up the cool guy board pop, kinda like this but you heel smash the front and it pops up and flips and lands in your arms. Takes a bit of practice but shit it’s styling if you pull it off. …”

It's best to learn as many ways as you can and mix them up, no method is perfect and they all have pro's and cons. u/ixAp0c's method is one of the best but it will also wear out the sole of your shoes, you can aim it into a ditch and jump off but then you have to chase your skateboard, you can hang your heel off the back of the tail and drag it, but wear off the heel of your shoe, or combine that with the tail drag and wearout both a little slower, I like popping my board up from the nose and catching it [VIDEO]. I like to learn as many as you can and mix them all up.
Chris Chann made a video on what I think he's talking about. [VIDEO]
you can use the evolved tail drag, where you tip the board back but instead of dragging the tail and losing precious plies of wood, you lean the heel of your back foot off and drag that. Probably the best way to stop. But why listen to me when you can watch this excellent video [VIDEO] with Spencer Nuzzi! Also, you can always run off the board and kick it up & catch it like a badass, like Chris Chann [VIDEO]

This [VIDEO] is how I like to pick up my board from cruising... Just tap on the tail in the middle with your toe, don't put your whole foot on the board, and snap it up. If you keep your foot over the board you'll weight it down, so pull your foot back slightly after you tap the tail to bring it up. For powerslides, straighten your front leg while using your back leg to swing out, then straighten your back leg to go back to riding. They will feel awkward at first, but you'll get it - they are really fun once you have them down pat & are just cruising down the street. Try rolling ollies, going a bit slow. They won't be as mentally difficult, and you will still have some forward momentum to help balance the landing. Once you get the pop / slide / land motion down it's basically time to start them moving, stationary is mainly for learning technique if it feels sketchy while moving, then once you have technique stationary go back to practicing the tricks moving (for any trick). You'll learn stuff twice if you master stationary then master them moving, and if you go that route, you might develop bad technique that can bite you when you do them fast.
