Short ollie tutorial from Team Self Destruct's SKATE baSICKs DVD, 2011. Skaters give step-by-step instructions on foot placement, pop and slide, with slow motion shots of the trick.

Why skaters like it

Gets posted in r/NewSkaters whenever someone can't pop or slide for an ollie. Slow motion shows the back foot flicking down and away so only the tail hits the ground.

“What helped me and my friend learn to pop Ollies better was, instead of pushing that back foot to the ground with the board. It’s more of a flick down and away from the ground. …”

Man. This was my Ollie. Like, my Ollie's were identical to yours not even that long ago. I always thought I had the technique pretty much down until I filmed myself out of curiosity and quickly realised my feet had totally different agendas. I'm still in the process of completing beating out all of the bad muscle memory I'd developed, but this is what I worked out... It's all about the back foot and the direction it takes after the pop. Like you, my back foot would always move up the board because my knee wasnt bending in the correct direction and although it felt like it, I wasn't popping my tail truly down. I'd almost pop with my back foot in a scoop motion towards my front foot - if anything you want the scoop motion to be going away from it. Make a conscious effort to pop with the force from your back foot going towards the tail - almost like you're trying to Ollie backwards. Watch videos of good Ollie's, pause it when they pop and again just after, notice where their back foot is, which direction their back knee is pointing and where their weight seems to be. Comparing freeze frames from this video to my own really helped: [VIDEO] Hope this made some sense and you work it out,…

[VIDEO] Take a look at this.. I learnt a lot from this, although I still can't slide properly. I end up flicking the board (like in a kickflip) which doesn't work for an ollie.

You mean an Ollie? Not sure how to pop? [VIDEO]

I tried to find a slomo on youtube and in the first video, the guy does exactly the thing you described, if I understood you correctly (you feel the resistance of the ground through your board when you pop). It's this one: [VIDEO] (pause the video and go frame by frame with the , and . key) He does a little flick with the back foot to avoid pinning the board down. In this one it's close visually, but I think it's clear his weight is off the tail when the tail clicks. [VIDEO] In this one, he clearly leaves the tail before the pop. [VIDEO] There is also this Kelly Hart kickflip slomo. He's a no ground contact guy as well and his style is great: [VIDEO]

What helped me and my friend learn to pop Ollies better was, instead of pushing that back foot to the ground with the board. It’s more of a flick down and away from the ground. So only the tail touches the ground and allows the board to pop itself. Slow-Mo breakdown of steps. [VIDEO]
