whythetrick breaks down ollie timing with 3D models and physics simulation. It explains why popping before you jump pins the board down and how to loosen pressure on the deck first.

Posted in r/NewSkaters whenever someone's ollie won't lift. Commenters say it fixed their timing and stopped them popping before jumping.

You are correct. And I agree that it completely confuses beginners and also slows people's progress. You should NOT really jump off your back foot/leg - the main reason is that you don't want to pin the tail down or stomp at all. You need to get all of your weight off the board, and you do this by jumping, so therefore, you should jump from both feet with your weight centered over your feet. This is how you get the h

Stop hunching your back over. Keep your back straight and bend with your knees more. You are bending your knees a bit but your entire jump should be coming from your knees, not your back. Looked also like you leaned forward a bit when you squatted on the first attempt. Make sure you go straight down where you are. If you are iffy about your balance do some hippie jumps - the board should stay where it is if your bala

I just barely started to feel like I was Ollieing for real this week after watching this video from whythetrick: [VIDEO] I could hippie jump high but my ollies looked a lot like yours, and I couldn’t figure out why. After watching the video, I realized the front leg has a lot more to do with making it feel like a “real” ollie than a lot of tutorials would lead you to believe. I like Mitchie and SkateIQ but they miss

I hate it when people say this because for a new skater it makes no sense. First of all, practice hippy jumps. Then, focus on popping AFTER you jump. Your feet will follow the larger mass so focus on bringing your center of gravity higher, and then popping, and then bringing feet up. Watch these vids as well [VIDEO] [VIDEO]
