Ryan Doyle teaches the parkour shoulder roll, a martial arts break fall, in a 2009 beginner tutorial. Not a skate video, but skaters use it to learn how to bail.

Why skaters like it

Linked in threads on falling safely. Skaters credit the roll with saving them from injury when bailing off a board.

“… Learn this technique, and practice safely bailing off of your board with it. I have never had to go to the hospital from a skateboarding injury, and I 100% credit this video.”

[VIDEO] i watched that video about 3 weeks prior to going longboarding with my friend down some medium slope hills for the first time. I ended up crouching to avoid speed wobbles, which both did not fix the speed wobbles and increased my speed. I had to bail out at around 25-30 MPH and that rolling technique saved my face/palms. My knees were scraped up a LOT due to my crouched posture, but I was still fully functional and could keep boarding for the rest of the night. make sure to practice your rolls until they're basically a reflex, and wear gloves while skating on pavement. Kneepads and a helmet are a great idea as well. Don't fear the pavement. Make the pavement fear you.

I used this video tutorial to learn how to do rolls back in the day. [VIDEO] Learn this technique, and practice safely bailing off of your board with it. I have never had to go to the hospital from a skateboarding injury, and I 100% credit this video.

My favorite way to practice falling is to just roll from the pavement into the grass. As soon as you hit the grass your board will stop abruptly, similar to the way it might if it hit a pebble. From there you can just practice bailing off in the relative safety of the grass. I've also been working on parkour rolls [VIDEO]. I try to do 10 or so in the grass every skate session, if you get good at them they are very effective on concrete. I still suck, but I'm making progress.

It is usualy easier to fall infront of your board so you can roll. Rolling Tutorial from a Parcour channel [VIDEO]. Basicly every movment you do after falling, reduces the force of that movement. If you fall, try to keep the movement (for example by rolling). Thats not a very good advice when you land on your ass. I don't know a good way to fall backwards in a forward movement, so avoid those situations. If somebody else knows a trick ... go ahead

Hahaha yeah, it was pretty rough! Yeah the roll was jumping forward with the body kind of sideays with the head tucked in and rolling over the arm, back and having the knees bent in the back leg, so after the roll was done the shin of that leg was completely in touch with the ground and you could just use it kind of as a lever by straighten up that leg to pull yourself up and end up just standing up after the roll. Idk if I could describe it in a way that is understandable LOL And I remember learning how to fall backwards straight down to the back Here, it was this roll from 1:32 [VIDEO]

ideally you want to do a variation of this, without bracing with your hands. [VIDEO]
