Wear a helmet! Bend your knees more than you think. Keep a wide stance on the board for better stability. Check out this vid for a lot of tips [VIDEO]

Alright, so that ramp is literally useless. You are really going to hurt yourself a lot with that thing. It would be better to just go to a skatepark. As for learning how to skate, I put some links below to some good YouTube channels that can help, SkateIQ is probably the best. If you come across a channel called Braille Skateboarding, stay away from it, that channel is owned and operated by the Church of Scientology, so if you do not want to support a cult stay away from it, plus the guy who created Braille sold out and chose Scientology over the skate community and some more. So these 4 channels I posted are operated by real skaters who actually care about skating, and each channel has hundreds of videos on how to skate, do tricks, and more. Hope this helps. Bit off topic, but once he’s got his board, there’s a bunch of good beginner tutorials on youtube [VIDEO] from which you can check out stuff that he can do to practice. It’ll be a bit tough at first, cause it’s a whole new type of balance to learn, but he’ll pick it up fast. Also, if there’s lots of people in the skate park, it can be a safer alternative to start practicing at an empty parking lot also.

I found this YouTube video from VLSkate [VIDEO] extremely helpful in getting me started. Just keep consistently practicing mainly. But as others have said, you'll need to work on your balance on either flat ground or completely stationary to get in riding position.

thanks! I was following the stance vlskate is showing in this video (I put a timestamp): [VIDEO] I know he doesn’t go deep explaining everything but I tried to replicate it exactly as he shows. I didn’t have my toes hanging off, and was having difficulty anyways

Also, start in an empty parking lot. Like other commenters said, protect your body. Roll around and find your balance on the board. Here’s a vid to dip yer skate shoes in: First Day Skateboarding [VIDEO]
