Ben Degros tests Independent 149 and Thunder trucks on a narrower deck to see how oversized trucks feel when grinding and flipping. Covers wheel overhang, weight and hollow trucks.

Why skaters like it

Linked in NewSkaters setup threads whenever someone asks if trucks wider than their deck are fine. Comments call it a thorough answer.

“Trucks wider than deck are fine unless you only do super tech or want the lightest board possible. Very good thorough video on this subject”

Traditionally, you'll want to the width of your deck and trucks to match for stability/properly sized. For example a super wide board with narrow trucks can make it feel "off" if you land on the edge of the board and the narrow trucks start to turn. But on the flip-side some like that or like their trucks wider than their board for a more stable ride. Nerd out with this video about truck to deck width from Ben Degro

Truck size is indeed confusing, but 144s (8.25" axle) would work absolutely fine with a 8.1" deck. Before Indy introduced the 144 many people would have skated 8.25" boards with 149s (8.5"), and an 0.25" difference between truck and board size is not unusual at all - here's Ben Degros (board setup ultra-geek) skating an 8.25 with 159s (8.75" axle): [VIDEO]

149 on 8.25 Ben Degroes [VIDEO] Linked above is Ben Degroes trying this exact setup and I’ll admit I was a naysayer. But the wheels literally sticks out 2mm MAX and they are Hollows so it is for certain doable and can’t wait to grind rails with this.

Don't even notice it. The axle is wider ever so slightly, but the wheels still sit flush (maybe even a little inside) with the edge of the board. Ben Degros has a good video on trucks wider than decks: [VIDEO]

Tbh you'll prob be just fine. Check out this vid review of a similar situation. [VIDEO] Just curious, why not just get an 8.25 deck?

Oh, and check out this video. It might make you feel better about the whole situation: [VIDEO]

It’s not just mega ramp and half pipe riders, tons of street dudes ride wider trucks. You might not be noticing it in person because if the truck isn’t half inch or more wider with wide wheels it doesn’t look that different from flush. Off the top of my head ,Jamie foy rides 8.75 thunder 151 on a 8.5 deck, Shin Sanbongi rides 9inch aces on a 8.5 deck, Milton Martinez rides 8.75 on a 8.6 deck, Kader rode 9.125 on 8.75
