A 65 second breakdown of Luan Oliveira's kickflip with written notes on screen. The uploader analyzes his foot setup, shoulder angle and flick to explain how the trick works.

Why skaters like it

Linked in r/NewSkaters threads when someone's kickflip turns backside or the flick feels off. Commenters point to Luan's open shoulders as the model to copy.

“Usually when the board turns backside, it's because your shoulder are too parallel to the board. Try it with your shoulders facing a bit more forward. …”

You want your shoulders somewhat open for a kickflip, at least when learning. If you watch OP's video carefully, you'll see that she closes her shoulders (so twists then backside slightly). This means that, even if you are trying to flick off the heelside of the nose, the twisting of your upper body will counteract that motion. Instead of following through off the heelside of the nose, your knee will start to follow your shoulders and you'll kick into the nose, turning the board. To work through it: open your leading shoulder in the direction you're flicking before you ollie. Your upper body should be turned slightly in you direction of motion. Watch Luan here: [VIDEO] Pay attention to his shoulders and his leading knee. Compare his form with OP's video. Once you start landing them, you can start to fine tune your form a bit, you may not end up fully open like Luan, but I think it's useful when learning to mimic his approach.

Very good tips by To fix the bending of the back/hips issue, I would suggest focusing on making the head follow a straight line while bending down and going up and doing most of the bending at the knees. For the flick: it might help to have your shoulders slightly angled forward(towards the nose), this will make it easier to flick with more power and with better follow through. To make this feel more normal, I recommend having your back foot point a bit forward too. Have a look at this clip to see what I mean with the shoulders: [VIDEO] This was u/PUDDINbOP comment that helped me

I've been working on my kickflips for about 3 and a half months. Most of the times my board wouldn't flip correctly or I wouldn't land with both my feet on it. To be honest, there isn't a magical solution, you gotta PRACTICE, PRACTICE and PRACTICE, and fully commit and believe in yourself that you'll land them. It surely takes a while, but before attempting make sure you have solid ollies. They don't have to be high or really stylish, just clean and consistent. [VIDEO] This video helped me a bit but there are many more out there.

[VIDEO] I copied this exact set up and it always felt the most natural for Kickflips.
