Slow Mo Mike's 2012 kickflip troubleshooting tutorial. It goes through the most common problems skaters hit, such as flicking straight down, chicken footing and not catching the board, with fixes for each.

Why skaters like it

Posted in r/NewSkaters whenever someone is stuck on kickflips. Commenters credit it, and the half kickflip drill, for landing their first ones.

“Thanks! I was chicken footing for weeks but this video ([VIDEO] ) helped me a lot. …”

## Background I've tried many different skate disciplines over 20 years. I won a slalom race, I rode down Alpine roads at 80km/h, I pushed 200 miles in 24 hours, and I grinded the coping in a 3m-deep bowl. Still, I didn't feel worthy of calling myself a skater because one trick was still missing. I was afraid to die because my last thought would be "Shoot, I never landed a kickflip". ## Video tutorials If anyone's interested, those 3 tutorials helped me the most: * The Ultimate Common Problems: Kickflip - How To - SlowMomike [VIDEO] * Why You CAN'T Kickflip! | Common Mistakes Explained! - Sean Brown [VIDEO] * Why You Can't Kickflip (and How to Fix It!) - Never Stop Improving [VIDEO] The first one has a good tip about the importance of landing half-flips. The second one has good tips about commitment in general, and flips in particular. The last one has a very good trick about foot positioning for the first kickflip. The goal is to land an ugly, rocket kickflip. Still, an ugly rocket flip is much better than nothing. ## Step-by-step It was a long process, mostly because I didn't train regularly enough. The steps were : * learn to ollie (kinda). This video (HOW TO OLLIE | Detailed Sl…

Make sure you're not flicking straight down. If you flick straight down, your foot will be below your board, and it'll be hard to land with your front foot on the board. You could try to land half kickflips, which will help you commit. They certainly helped me when I had that problem! Here's how to land half kickflips [VIDEO]

a few things i think about that helps me: 1. thinking about how your center of balance shouldnt move. this one guy goes into really good detail about it for his kickflip video but it applies to a lot of tricks in skateboarding that i still keep in mind: [VIDEO] 2. a lot of it is in the toes! use your toes to control pop 3. keep shoulders STRAIGHT!!!!! i always forget this but it helps a lot 4. most tricks have a little bit of delay in them halfway through. i.e a kickflip is popping, pausing for a millisecond in the air to get the board up, THEN flicking. but this goes for basically all tricks. remember to give some pause time so you don’t sacrifice pop hope these help!

Thanks! I was chicken footing for weeks but this video ([VIDEO] ) helped me a lot. In his first tip he says landing on the back of the board is better for your muscle memory than flipping it all the way and only landing one foot. Once your focus is more on landing on the board then you can shift your focus to the actual flicking/flipping of it. Good luck!!

First make a cup of coffee or tea cause this will take about twenty minutes. He really knows how to explain things. After that you should know all you need to know and then you should self correct until you land them. Im learning kickflips too and i did the exact same thing. I got over it by watching this [VIDEO] video (watch the video in his description too), i think they're good videos. Next sesh i tried to just suck my feet into my body and slamming my front foot close to the back foot. me during sesh: back foot lands on the bord, front foot doesn't, bring front foot close to back foot no mater what after flicking up, landed it, and now i completely solved this bad habit. Practice, you got this!!
