No, I used to rollerblade when I was a kid for years, and switched over to skateboarding after getting sick of carrying shoes to hang out with friends / go in stores / etc. They are completely different, my years of rollerblading didn't prepare me for skateboarding; it still took me awhile to get the basics. Especially when I bombed my first hill that I hit on rollerblades a few times, I didn't know speed wobble was a thing and ate shit once I started going faster. I made it like 1/8 of the way down that hill... A good argument to your parents is how skateboarding is much safer in terms of bailing out [VIDEO] (as parents they are probably most concerned for your safety). When you feel things are about to go bad on a skateboard, it's easy to hop off / kick the board out from under you. On rollerblades the wheels are strapped to your feet, so you can't really use your feet to prevent a fall & sometimes the wheels being attached to your feet can make a fall worse.

Learn to fall correctly. Once you aren't afraid to fall, commiting to tricks is a whole lot easier. I made a video awhile back on how to fall ([VIDEO]) and andy schrock made one here ([VIDEO])
