There are two different techniques people use for no comply 180s, and you've described both in your last paragraph. One school of thought de-weights the entire board to get the front foot on the ground, and then deliberately pops the tail. Sara Park-Matott uses this method and has a great video explanation [VIDEO] it. The other school of thought (I'm in this one) does the spring-tension thing that u/naggyboo mentions. Ben Degros gives a good explanation [VIDEO]. Jonny Giger also has a good explanation [VIDEO]. Whichever technique you end up feeling most comfortable with, one of the big secrets to this trick is that the rotation comes from your whole body; it's not just a scooping motion of your rear foot.
It was this one [VIDEO]. What I didn't get was how to get the step off to pop at all. At first the board just sprung up with no real pop at all, just kind of got stuck between my foot and the ground. Then I figured I needed to do a wired kind of hop thing, but none of that was right. It's when he talks about the board being like a coiled spring or a catapult that it made sense.
