Short Triple Eight NYC piece from 2015 in which Mike Vallely explains why he now wears a helmet every time he skates after decades without one. Part of the Get Used To It helmet project.

Why skaters like it

Gets linked in helmet threads, mostly by newer skaters, as proof that a street skating icon wears one and sees it as part of who he is.

“he's trying to be a positive influence in the skate world by wearing one, trying to get it more acceptable. I respect him for it. …”

To answer your helmet question: most people don't wear helmets if they're skating "street" or doing tricks on flat ground. But "vert" skaters on big ramps or bowls will almost always wear helmets, kneepads, etc. You really don't want to hit your head if you're dropping-in to a 3-meter-high ramp. There are a decent number of skaters who just always wear a helmet, though. Mike Vallely [VIDEO] is pretty well-known for it.
