Rodney Mullen's 2013 TEDxOrangeCoast talk on falling, failing and getting up again. He ties his trick innovation to persistence, belief and learning from other skaters.

Why skaters like it

Posted to new skaters dealing with fear and frustration, and whenever people talk about how belief, not physical ability, is what blocks a trick.

“It's not the physical achievement of the trick that's the barrier to success, it's the belief that it can even be done.”

Like what /u/No_pants_no_owl was alluding to; Rodney Mullen describes in this video [VIDEO] how he watches videos of kids performing tricks that he's spent his whole life trying to do. You are going to fall, but it builds character [VIDEO]. You're going to get frustrated, and annoyed, but if skateboarding is truly for you, you're going to have fun. If you catch the bug you've found something you'll never want to give up and truly understand the meaning of 'skate or die'. Best tip I can give is learn how to roll when falling and don't land on your hands. Have fun!
