Jonny Giger breaks down kickflips in a 10 minute tutorial from 2020, covering foot position, the flick and how to commit to the jump. Filmed at Braille with pop shove-it and ollie prep along the way.

Why skaters like it

Gets linked in r/NewSkaters whenever someone asks about a stuck kickflip, mostly for how clearly it explains where to flick and why.

“Try kicking forward (off the nose) a bit more more rather than backwards. Still aim to just kick the edge of the board, but the kick direction could be more forwards. Jonny explains it way better here! …”

It is a little bit. Doing a few Ollie's and making sure you level those out nicely will probably help you not rush the flick. Film yourself in slo-mo if you can and watch your movements back, make adjustments on timing. Make sure you flick up/out not down, otherwise your front foot will be below the skateboard and you'll have to lift it above the board again in order to land. Kickflips are caught with the back foot, and while practicing tricks moving is always a good idea, it might help you to do it stationary at 1st and concentrate on Landing back foot only.. that way when you land with both feet your instinct is to catch with your back foot. here's a tutorial from a great skater and somebody who does excellent tutorials and it might help you make them real steezy [VIDEO] Edit: popping a little higher might help too

People are talking about your foot position, pop harder etc, but I think by far the main issue here is your posture. You barely actually bend your knees and instead just massively hunch over at the waist. That's not only terrible for your spine in the long term, but will do you absolutely no favors for learning any kind of skateboard tricks. You gotta work on fixing that posture. Work on squatting down and keep your back as straight as you possibly can. [VIDEO] This vid has some great angles right off the bat. Notice how Giger bends his knees first and foremost whilst keeping his spine in a reasonable, balanced position. That's what you want to achieve. Watch as many kickflip tutorial vids as you can and study the way that pro-skaters do their kickflips.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, here are two of my favorite videos for kickflip tutorials. Hope they help!: [VIDEO] [VIDEO]

I think for me it was thinking of it as an ollie with a flick rather than a full drag. Makes it a lot easier to commit to jumping. Once I got past that initial fear of jumping, I worked a ton on the flick (if your board flips vertically, flick more off the side). It's also good to watch multiple kickflip guides and really internalizing the tips they give and thinking hard after every failed attempt about what you're doing wrong to then try and correct it on your next try. I personally really like Sean Brown's video on common mistakes [VIDEO], as well as Jonny Giger's guide [VIDEO]. Hope this helps! If you have any more questions just let me know :)

Then maybe it's just your muscle memory trying to do shuvits. I'd try to practice doing kickflips but catching it only with the front foot until you get used to the new motions. Something like the motion here [VIDEO] (and that video as a whole is super useful)

Kinda depends on what you want to learn. For freestyle, I think Tony Gale makes the best videos and is criminally underrated (his channel is Freestyle Tricktips [LINK]). For street, I like Jonny Giger [VIDEO] and Skatedeluxe [VIDEO].

Exactly! Lol I was on YouTube trying to find and example for it. Do that 1000 times and focus on popping first then flicking. While you were answering me I found this video that at 7:00 shows what I was saying: [VIDEO]
