You shouldn't have to drill anything or change anything to cruise comfortably on a normal skateboard. They can handle higher speeds than it's physically possible to push up to. Where they start to reach their limit is on really fast downhill runs. They can still ride down hills pretty darn fast, but they're not able to go 50mph like a longboard can. >My concern is that I can't attempt to bomb relatively small hills with 54mm wheels because they get caught on objects First of all, you shouldn't be trying to bomb hills in your first week of skateboarding. They're not at all a beginner thing. You should learn to ride well (and very importantly brake well) on flat ground first. Second, it's absolutely possible to bomb any hill on those 54mm clouds. Running off your board should be a last resort if you really don't think you can stop yourself. Putting your foot down when you're not going too fast isn't the worst habit but you should try and learn to powerslide. This [VIDEO] is a super gnarly example but you get the idea. It's all about turning your board 90º to slow your momentum it's all in the shoulders. Check out this [VIDEO] tutorial for some help.

Downhill skating in the competition sense is not super common anymore, but hill bombimg [VIDEO] is fairly popular on the more extreme side of street skating

It's kind of hard to describe. First off, I've noticed that it helps to be going fast. The next thing I do is forcefully turn my board about 90 degrees while keeping my body slightly leaned back behind my feet and board. I tend to not slide as far though because my wheels are fairly soft and catch the concrete pretty quickly. This video inspired me to start learning how to powerslide: [VIDEO]
