Why skaters like it

Posted in beginner threads as a model for a high, clean kickflip with a late flick, and in best kickflip debates as proof Lizard King has the best one.

Back foot problems: you are barely lifting (jumping really) with your back foot. As soon as you pop it, you pick it up and leave it suspended for fractions of a second. Realistically your back foot, along with the rest of your body, should be in the air for about a whole second. You're also moving your back foot backwards which makes no sense and you should stop doing that immediately before you get too used to doing that. Your back foot needs to go straight up and down in a jumping motion. Front foot problems: you aren't really flicking to the top pocket of your board. Kickflips are very similar to an ollie. When you ollie, you are raising your front foot in a jumping motion and letting the grip tape allow the board to go with you as it slides against the outside of your foot, usually letting the nose catch it and leveling it out. Same goes for a kickflip except there's a last second step. When you kickflip you want to do the EXACT same motion, but right at top of your Ollie, you want to flick your foot OUTWARDS (and slightly to the right or left depending on your stance) for it to flip. Here you are flicking below the bolts and straight down. Flicking down will not give you prope…

It might be that you are flicking really soon and not getting a good slide. There is a good video on youtube with Lizard King, a pro, talking about how he learned kickflips. He mentions how a lot of people flick really soon but he thinks of it as popping and then waiting until the last second to flick out. Maybe that will help out a bit. Here's the video if you want to check it out [VIDEO] Edit: Also check out this trickipedia of him doing kick flips. There is one good slow mo in there where you see him pop, pretty much level the board completely out then flick. I need to work on this as well. [VIDEO]

Scoot that front foot back 1-2 inches, but leave the toe close to the edge of the board. What's happening is you're not giving your foot enough time to "catch" the nose during the flick, making the board lag behind just a bit. It'll feel awkward at first since your foot will be flicking longer, but once you adjust to that, then you should be able to flick the board forward so your feet land on bolts. Watch Lizard King [VIDEO] or humble me in the white shirt from 4 years ago. [LINK] Once you've got that down, start popping higher and higher.

This is called doing a trick fakie or nollie, which is generally harder. For instance, most people learn how to kickflip [VIDEO] first, then go on to learn nollie kickflips [VIDEO]. So when you see someone do a nollie version of a trick in a line, it's more impressive than seeing them do a regular version of a trick.

Treat the kickflip as an ollie with a delayed flick. Do an ollie, delay for a slight moment and then flick the nose. [VIDEO] [VIDEO]
