Ben Degros explains pros and cons of steep kick decks, covering pop, timing and feel against mellow concave. A deck-choice guide, with tags aimed at older skaters.

Why skaters like it

Linked in beginner threads when people ask how kick angle changes pop and timing, or what deck to buy next.

“… It can also affect the height of your pop: steeper kicks = greater force transfer = higher pop. …”

Unless you have money to waste or you are fat and worried about snapping your board I would not get a VX. I will buy them if I find one on sale but I don't think it's worth it for the full price (at least in Canada as the prices went up a lot recently) because they will just get razor tail just as fast and maybe even faster than a normal board. I can sometimes get 3 shop boards for the same cost as 1 VX/Flight Deck. I am not sure about all Creature boards, just this particular one had pretty steep kicks. This might also be because that board has a big wheelbase for the size, it was like 14.37 which is kind of big for an 8" board (most are 14.25" or smaller). I think the best thing to do is go to the skate shop and look at some decks because sometimes even the same decks can have different steepness. This is because some companies press the boards in a pile so each one will be slightly different. Also would recommend to watch this video he talks about this type of board and what it is good for. Personally I didn't like it that much and actually like a more mellow board but everyone is different. [this video]

It'll affect the timing of your pop: popping from the steeper side of the board will be "slower" because the greater angle = more distance between the board and the ground. It can also affect the height of your pop: steeper kicks = greater force transfer = higher pop. There's an element of personal preference to it for sure: I know some real rippers who skate tail-forward for that steeper kick. Here's a Ben Degros [this video] video that sort of gets into it.
