Old clip of Aaron "Jaws" Homoki ollieing Vons gap in Carlsbad, CA, filmed by Tim Vasquez. He slams on the way and has to work for it, and he does not roll away clean.

Why skaters like it

Posted as a go-to example of how brutal huge gaps are. Commenters wince at the slams and use it to show skaters do not always land on their board.

> How can the human body withstand so much impact while doing stairs and huge gaps like that, but almost certainly without the skateboard their legs would break. That's not necessarily true because, even when doing big drops, skateboarders don't always land on their board every time. Even Jaws [VIDEO] (old clip, but you get the point). Firstly, most skateboarders don't start doing this stuff right away - by the time they're jumping off of tall things they've (hopefully) already built up stronger leg muscles which help absorb the impact. Secondly, the skateboard itself does absorb some energy as the parts flex on impact. The idea that forward momentum reduces the impact is kind of a misconception. The force of impact due to gravity is perpendicular to your forward velocity, and so in the case of rolling away on flat ground, is completely independent. *However*, if you bail and kick your board away in the air, some forward velocity may help you only in that it will make body rolling easier. Rolling helps a lot because it moves all of your weight from being directly above your feet (which can cause injury) and essentially spreads the impact out over your body and a longer time period.…
