That's definitely not what I'm saying at all. Of course other athletes are doing difficult things. I'd probably have to write a short book to fully explain skating culture and give you a real answer to this the way I really want to. In terms of pushing yourself? It's hard to say. Obviously every sport is pushing the bar, but the outlooks are just different. In gymnastics for example, no on in their right mind would tell you the athletes aren't pushing the bar with the maneuvers they do in the air. I think the basic observer probably watched skating and thinks to themselves "why would anyone want to play a sport with such a low bar of success?", but that's pretty easily answered when you go watch any video on this sub of some kid or even adult landing their first kickflip and seeing the look on their face. The "battle" for a trick is part of skating. Showing off and jock culture are generally discouraged. This breeds an enviorment where instead of skaters doing something they KNOW they have on lock, they'll instead try something they're still learning so that they can get that rush again.
