Skateboarding in its beginnings, became counterculture. It was something lazy and angry kids did something that dropouts and bad influences did, out in the streets, bothering people, "vandalizing public property", etc etc. It was very frowned-upon by the general populace. Kids who had tough environments growing up banded together in the streets, and became their own player in the chaos. It isn't that it's ok for skaters to do drugs and alcohol and party like there's no tomorrow at the first chance they get. It's that skateboarding was just one more thing among the rest. Drugs, alcohol, skateboarding, graffiti, fights, petty crime and shoplifting... it was all words in the same lexicon, at least in the eye of the general people. That's where skating comes from man. That's the skating that I grew up with. That's the skating that's represented in Vice's video about Harmony Korine [VIDEO] and also so many other people's stories like Muska, Andrew Reynolds... For Skateboarding to become an olympic sport, it is the same as saying that Hip Hop is officially part of Broadway or the Grammys. It has happened, and the people who experienced it all from start till now still can't believe it.
